Merchants asked to secure their sites

According to SFGate, Today is the deadline for any business that accepts credit cards over the Internet to meet new security standards for their Web sites.
The new rule comes from the big credit card brands – Visa, MasterCard Worldwide, American Express, Discover Financial Services and JCB International – and is intended to protect credit card data from Web attacks, which are increasing. It is known as Payment Card Industry standard 6.6.
By today, businesses with publicly accessible Web sites that accept credit cards are supposed to have had their code inspected for software flaws by an outside assessor or have a firewall installed that inspects code automatically.
If businesses are found to be out of compliance, the banks that accept their credit card payments could be fined.
The standard was issued in September 2006, so it shouldn’t be a surprise.
Are dating sites aware of this? What are you doing to comply?

I created a room at Friendfeed called Onlinedatinginsider. Friendfeed is where you go to check on what your friends and colleagues are up to. The new room feature let’s you link to all sorts of sources, blogs, Flickr, music sites, etc.
You can either visit http://friendfeed.com/rooms/onlinedatinginsider
In your web browser or subscribe via your RSS newsreader.
I imported my list of 12 dating blogs, with over 6,500 readers. These are mostly industry blogs. Might as well open it up to all relationship blogs and then we can use FriendFeed’s filtering to get you just the news and information you want.
I’ll be sending out emails this afternoon inviting a bunch more dating bloggers into the network. If you have a blog and don’t get invited, contact me and I’ll make sure to get you on the list.
As with a lot of what we do here, it’s an experiment. Let us know what you think.
Don’t [...]

Dating Links For Sunday June 29, 2008

Match.com will start advertising to affluent singles.
The new Honesty Online blog.
I grow weary of signing up for new dating sites. Does anyone actually think to ask if their questions are any good? Why don’t dating sites link to popular photo-sharing sites? I have to open up iPhoto, find a photo crop/export it to desktop, then upload it. This is 2008 people and I don’t have a lot of time.
Any dating site that lets someone join without a photo is doing them a disservice. I don’t care if you’re a CEO or look like a troll, you need a photo. Life isn’t You’ve Got Mail, dating sites need to wake up and start building in privacy tools like eHarmony to gradually reveal yourself. Punish people without photos by limiting search results or something, anything to avoid the dreaded blank grey picture box. If I was buying a dating site, I wouldn’t [...]

Dan sounded great on paper: Upper East Side, Fieldston, Brown undergrad, NYU Law, formerly a corporate lawyer, currently a CEO of a nonprofit that seeks to foster peace between Palestinian and Israeli children…My mother met his mother at a charity dinner. Seated next to each other, nibbling on raisin nut rolls, patiently waiting for their salad plates to be whisked away, they noticed that neither woman ate the shaved fennel. By the time the blackened sea bass was served they were dear friends. She didn’t wait for dessert to show my mother a photograph of her son, and my mother called me from the car on her way home to tell me the great news.
“She had a photograph of her son in her evening bag?”
“Actually, she had it on her cell phone, and he looked very handsome with a nice head of [...]

Lot’s of news to cover, rumors to mull over, a tremendous amounts of comments, dating site launches and as always, much love to our sponsors, Userplane, SkaDate, ivoation and Dating Ad Network. Click their ads and find out how they can help you run a successful online dating site.
I had lunch with Ravi @ Viximo this week and then headed over to check out their new offices. Ravi has a great blog post up on his blog, Virtual Goods Branding 101. Viximo just launched Birthday Calendar on Facebook two weeks ago. 166,000 installs. I see 175k daily active users. Nice numbers given the lack of traction new FB applications have been getting lately. Supposedly 200k daily users is the magic number, when things really start to happen.

Problems at FriendFinder and Penthouse

It’s been a while since we’ve heard a juicy rumor.
Valleywag says:
What’s going on over at FriendFinder Networks, née Penthouse Media Group? Apparently the effort to migrate into an online publishing and social networking powerhouse is being hampered by developers dissatisfied with working conditions and an inability to hire new staff — even though supervisor Anthony Previte threatened he could replace the disgruntled employees at a whim, according to a tipster.
This could affect the planned $250 million IPO. Then again, consider the source. Still, makes for a juicy Friday rumor.

Profile Writing Tips: Avoid Writing “My Friends Say I’m…”
DatingTales wrote an intriguing post today on
Here’s a little taster
Writing an online profile for a singles site is tough. It’s difficult to talk ourselves up and it’s also difficult to make ourselves sound different than everyone else. One of the easiest things you can do to set yourself apart is to avoid the phrase: “My friends say I’m…”
So what do you say instead? Here are a few suggestions.
When I look in the mirror: Why not say what you think instead of what other people think? Of course, you don’t want to sound arrogant, but you could easily say something like, “When I look in the mirror I see the girl next door; someone who likes to have fun, but is also well-mannered and ambitious.”
Show it, don’t tell it: A lot of people say, “My friends say I have a good sense of humor.” An alternative would be to tell a joke or to use punchy one-liners throughout your profile [...]
