Where Did They Meet?

Walking back from the convenience store, I was on the phone with Sam Moorcroft from ChristianCafe.com. Right after we hung up I walked past the neighborhood church and an absolutely stunning bride and groom emerged. I said congratulations and asked them how they met? Leave a comment with your guess about how the happy couple connected.

FriendFinder IPO Delayed Once Again

Here’s a little taster
The Friendfinder IPO, set to occur this Thursday, has been pushed back a week due to a volatile stock market. What are they waiting for, favorable astrological and wind conditions Frankly, I’m not sure how many times the worlds largest network of dating sites can afford to keep pushing back it’s IPO.
FriendFinder, on the other hand, was expected to flounder; analysts said there was minimal interest in the deal. The company is turning over all proceeds from its IPO to its creditors, which have waived loan-default terms. Its revenue for the first three quarters of 2009 was flat compared with the same period of 2008, and it has a history of net losses.
The financial markets are about to exert their influence on one of the most recognized brands the casual/adult dating market. Analysts have known from the start that this particular organization was a tough sell and the fact that [...]

Social Net For Gay Men Fabulis Raises $625K

Fabulis, a social net and lifestyle site aimed at gay men, has raised $625,000 in a first round funding. founder and CEO Jason Goldberg previously sold Socialmedian to Xing. Via Paidcontent. Here’s more on the company from founder Jason Goldberg.
Very slick pre-launch signup form. It’s amazing how many sites basically ask for 1/4 of a profile to sign up for pre-launch. All you need is an email address, seriously.
The blog they use is tumblr, super-simple to sign up and alias to a subdomain. Posterous is another good one. Looks like Fabulis is running everything off of Amazon Web Services.
Keep an eye on this one, got my spider-sense in tingling.

PlentyofFish Demands Income Description

Saw this while browsing PlentyofFish:
Please enter your income, we use it for matchmaking and it will never appear on your profile! You will not show up in the rows of images on top of pages, My Matches and many other sections of the site until you do.
This is also probably used for courting advertisers and targeting purposes. Nothing to keep people from selecting whatever they want, but a very direct way to force people to provide additional information about themselves.
Getting people to fill out their entire dating profile over time without bogging them down at the time of signup is something I’ve helped a lot of dating sites with. As with all new features, Always Be Testing.

How to Loose Members Gracefully

I subscribe and unsubscribe from websites all the time. Often it’s to see how a site lets me go. Many dating sites make the process unbearable, up to 10 screens of junk to go through. To me, thats being a sore loser, although the argument for this sort of behavior is quite clear, I say let them go, grab some parting information if possible and move on. I liked this RescueTime unsubscribe email so much I resubscribed.

Gay Dating Site Commercial Banned From Superbowl

This is a classic gorilla marketing tactic deserving a golf-clap. ManCrunch (related to sugar daddy site EstablishedMen), creates an ad that CBS will never approve. Planning on being rejected from the start, they send news to TMZ and enjoy the free publicity. Arguments about double standards (see GoDaddy ads), and appropriate content for super bowl ads ensue. Nicely played. ManCrunch can thank Godaddy banned Superbowl commercials for the inspiration.

This Valentine’s Day there will be Fewer Lonely Farmers

When it comes to niches one of my favorite originals is FarmersOnly. Of course PeopleMedia is now the clear 500-pound gorilla in the space with it’s network of niche sites, but I’m still a fan of small, passionate dating sites based on well-defined niches. They may not make millions but they have great stories to tell.
Great testimonial: Recently, a member called to thank Farmers Only. She met the man of her dreams. On their first date, he drove the 3.5 hours to her home and, knowing she worked with horses, he brought 40 bales of hay instead of the traditional flowers.
How awesome is that? I don’t like to go out to dinner on the first date, let alone lug around bales of hay.
