Online Dating Industry Update For 2-26-10
Jaron wrote an intriguing post today on
Here’s a little taster
Speeddate saw a 40% increase in users the week after Valentine’s Day this year, and saw a 34% increase in online speed dating in 2009.
It’s common practice for dating sites to feature an associated magazine, blog, Twitter or Facebook account. These are usually filled with first date stories and “expert” advice from dating coaches and enticements to get people to visit the site and sign up. I have been meeting with content providers who will provide dating site magazines with content, some of which provide a much deeper level of service to companies like Match.com. Many daters get their advice and stories from big online magazines like The Frisky, YourTango and AskMen or syndicated content from Single Edition.
This is old news, but I just learned that the guy who sued Match.com dropped his lawsuit against Match.com because he was Humiliated by the media coverage. Turns out the guy actually found [...]

A Nightclub, A Phone And a Hookup
Jaron wrote an intriguing post today on
Here’s a little taster
As companies continue to figure out ways to leverage location-based services, the dating industry has taken a few baby steps in promising directions. Yet the feedback I’m hearing is that the majority of singles are going to remain wary of dating services that let you find singes within your geographic area, at least for the near future.
Mobile seems to be good for browsing profiles and communicating with other members, but thats about it. I sure wish Match would release some stats on their mobile users. What are they doing, what aren’t they doing? Which features are the most popular, the least? When during the day does mobile usage peak? This is the stuff I’d love to hear about.
Last night I went to a nightclub for the first time in ages. Several people in the crowd were using Foursqure, Skout, Grindr and a few other location-based applications so I fired up [...]

What Is Match.com Going to Do Next?

Here’s a little taster
Given yesterday’s impending acquisition of Singlesnet, I wanted to throw out a few things that I have been thinking about lately.
Recently dating industry insiders have been talking more about how to compete with Match.com.
In my mind, to compete with Match its important to understand the company’s history, various marketing strategies, branding and several other factors, including how they leverage being part of IAC. It’s also important to understand the downside of being too big, positioned in the marketplace as the Kleenex of dating (which has its own challenges) and a number of other factors that I share with my clients.
Sam from OKCupid asked the industry at iDate why Match was stuck where it is in terms of growth, and according to people present, nobody in the dating industry sitting in the same room could answer the question. I found that disturbing, so I’m going to kick off the conversation here.
As [...]

IAC’s Match.com to Acquire Singlesnet

Here’s a little taster
Several weeks ago I heard from a reliable source that IAC Has Acquired Another Top Dating Site. I’ve known who it was all along, and decided to do the right thing and not mention the name of the company being acquired on this blog. I just heard from Match’s PR team and the public announcement is happening shortly, the big news is that Match.com will acquire Singlesnet. Here are the important parts of the press release:
Match.com, an operating business of IAC (Nasdaq: IACI), announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Singlesnet, one of the most visited online dating sites in the United States. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
“Singlesnet has built a heavily trafficked site with an active and dedicated community of users,” said Greg Blatt, CEO of Match.com. “While Singlesnet’s traffic is currently in decline, we believe that by applying our category expertise we [...]

I can’t use my existing HO credential at HerWay, I’m told this will be taken care of at some point.
I’ll say one thing about Herway, they know exactly how to send out a brief teaser that takes about 10 [...]

Augmented Identity App Great For Stalking, Death of Business Cards Imminent
Jaron wrote an intriguing post today on
Here’s a little taster
Swedish mobile software firm The Astonishing Tribe has created a mobile application called Recognizr, a facial recognition service based on a mashup of face recognition technology, computer vision, cloud computing, and augmented reality.
Point your phone at someone’s face and Recognizr’s face recognition software creates a 3-D model of the person’s face and uploads it to a server where it’s matched with an identity in the database. The application then displays the subject’s name and links to their social persona such as photo sharing sites and social networks. More at PopSci.
Doesn’t work on iPhone, and I need to dig into the privacy concerns, of which I am sure of two things: 1) this will freak people out to no end, and 2) The Tribe has most likely identified most if not all of the issues people have with this sort of application. Time to break out the Richard Nixon masks!

Zoosk is Crushing All Dating Site Traffic
Jaron wrote an intriguing post today on
Here’s a little taster
Look at this ComScore data on Zoosk vs. Match and Singlesnet. Of course we don’t know what is driving this gargantuan traffic spike, but Zoosk raised $30 million, and if they poured some of that into a marketing campaign (Zoosk ads are everywhere), that could account for some or all of the spike.
I treat all casual dating site traffic spikes with a healthy dose of criticality. It’s real all right, but what is the effect on the site? Are these people converting to paid members (more serious) or just clicking ads(casual) or doing nothing (junk traffic.)
So, Zoosk, nice hockey-stick growth, what’s the deal?
